Handelsblatt: Duitstalige internationale tv-zender

German broadcaster RTL Group plans to launch a German-language international television station, called RTL International, on January 18, Handelsblatt has learned.

The new global airwaves will be fed by programs from several of RTL Group’s channels, including news formats and entertainment bits from its flagship RTL Television channel and entertainment channel VOX.

“There are up to 10 million Germans living abroad,” Stefan Sporn, who heads international distribution at RTL Germany, told Handelsblatt. “They usually don’t have access to a linear German TV channel,” he added. The channel will first be available in Canada, southern Africa, Australia, Israel and Georgia. The United States and Brazil should follow soon, officials said.

“We’re focusing on regions where many Germans live and we can ensure service,” Mr. Sporn said. Sources at RTL said setting up the new channel cost an amount in the low single-digit millions, as it will only reuse content and not require its own production. Mr. Sporn said he expects RTL International to break even within one to three years.
